11 June 2008 - week 24
Hellooooo from a cold, rainy and blustery typical Cape Town winter weather that just screams for rib-sticking food and self-saucing chocolate puddings ;)))))
Brad is to thank for the dvd's below...amazing stuff...and so cool that we can share it with all of you :)
"What's happening this week....By week 24, your baby - who is now about 8-10 inches long and weighs 1-3 pounds - has already begun her main project for the rest of your pregnancy: putting on weight. You’ll notice now that what began as gentle wiggling will become poking and even sharp kicking. Some women experience shooting pains and backaches if the baby puts too much pressure on the sciatic nerve, which runs down the back of the leg."
From another newsletter " Your baby weighs about 1.2 pounds and is just under 12 inches from head to heel. His or her lungs have started secreting surfactant, the substance that keeps the moist, interior surface of the lungs from sticking together; and he or she is practicing breathing. Your baby's eyes are also watching for light and its ears are listening to your heart beat and your stomach growl."
from newsletter # 3 "Since your baby's inner ear is now completely developed, she can tell when she is upside down or right side up as she floats or moves in your uterus. She is still red and skinny, but will soon start to put on weight."
From my side....the movements are amazing and one is definitely more active than the other....or so I think anyway. I've nicknamed the one "Thumper" and the other "Dancer"...so we have a ballet dancer and a karate kid on our hands...ha ha ha. I wonder if they'll be similar or poles apart?
I also wonder if my cup of coffee every other morning and the occasional glass of red wine is doing them any harm? I feel lost in all the info out there (for and against) but have not gone overboard so that kind of appeases my guilt feelings a little.
The most amazing thing for me is seeing Brad's face as he feels the movements now. The baby on the right is not shy and is quite happy to show off to her Dad on how great she can thump Mom in the ribs with hands or feet. His eyes sparkle and the smile on his face reaches all round the world. He's going to be the most amazing Dad and is already as proud as punch :)
Brad and I had a sneaky little night away camping in Warthog on Friday night in Robertson, so he could ride the Whacky Wheels MTB ride on the Saturday morning. It was awesome to get away and spend a night in our little tent, next to the Breede River. Although admittedly reaching the bottom rung of the ladder took a bit of huffing and puffing :)
Brad rode the race in the pouring rain and came back covered in gooey mud. Luckily the race organisers had provided HOT showers, so he cleaned up nicely and we spent the rest of the day driving from wine farm to wine farm, enjoying the products of their hard labour. We were blown away by the hospitality of the farmers who had opened up the houses as tasting venues, and met some salt of the earth amazing people. A breathe of fresh air to the snootyness of the usual run of the mill winefarms in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, etc etc.
Anyway we left the area at 6pm for the 2hour drive home, and woke refreshed and full of energy on Sunday. Amazing what one night away can do to one's mental health ;)
It was lovely to see Alan last night, who is Cape Town talking about the shares market....and then had a lovely dinner with Rod and Les at WangThai afterwards.
Today my Pilates class took a lot of energy and I was pooped. Bumped into my first boss at Biggie Best in Cavendish, Ruth Benbow-Hebbert - wow what a timewarp for the both of us! Came home and almost slept for 2-hours.....lovely with the rain pouring outside.
Brad's in PE for the night and the house is dead-quiet/boring and I'm lonely without him.....he says the more I'm getting on in the pregnancy, the more Mrs Cling-peach I'm becoming. He'll be home tomorrow night so at least not nearly as long as the San Francisco trip. That was a killer. Stadiums stadiums stadiums :))))))

We went for the 22-week scan (an hour long) yesterday...and once again was blown away by the technology of it all. Dr Morris received her new machine 3 weeks ago...1st one in Africa..and show the most amazing images and 4-D pics of the babies - sepia coloured images of the babies faces....so you can see exactly what your child is going to look like...but more importantly, that the babies don't have cleft lips/palates etc. Anyway "the machine" collects data from all her patients and gets stored at a facility in London, so in hindsight they should be paying us for the research we are helping gather and not the other way around....choke!
Both babies are just beautiful....and it appears that the one will be short like me with a button nose, and the other tall like Brad with his exact nose!!! Their femur length at this stage only shows a 2mm difference, so we see when they grow up :) The weight of the one is 530g and the weight of the other is 503g, so also a minimal difference. However when all the measurements are calculated, it shows that the growth rate of the one twin is 2 days ahead of her sister.
Oh and just so we are 100% all sure, they are both definitely girls. They usually only confirm it at the 22-week scan, just in case.
Here's what's happening during Week 22 of the pregnancy:
Your baby is about 7 1/2 inches from crown to rump and weighs between thirteen and sixteen ounces—about the size of a small grapefruit. She is entering her fifth month of existence. Her fingernails are almost fully grown, and her organ systems are becoming more functional and specialized. She has a distinct pair of lips, and her first canines and molars are developing below her gum line. She looks like a miniature newborn. Blood is traveling through the umbilical cord at four miles an hour, fueling her growth with oxygen and nutrients.

17 May 08 - Saturday
Hello all!
I dropped Brad off at the airport tonight, for his week-long trip to the USA. Already sad and lonely without him. Chinzy the cat has been hanging around here the whole night for moral support I think.
However the trip is fabulous for Brad! Networking and cutting edge stuff to keep him at the top of his game, and then he also gives a talk on intelligent stadiums.....see his article in Engineering News. Brad is amazing and I'm so proud of him, so with heavy heart had to have one last kiss and hug and then he was gone :(
The positive is that I'm going to spend next weekend with Mike, Lu and Caitlin, and fetch darling on Monday :))))) so it's only a week really. But still (drop-lip) we don't spend long periods of time apart and it's always awful.
Have started clearing out the office which is to become the babies room, so will have plenty to keep me busy...which is always a good thing :)
I'm 5 months pregnant tomorrow 18 May, and go into week 21 of the pregnancy! Can't believe how quickly the time is flying by. Only have about 3 and a half months left!!!!! Here is what is happening next week:
By week 21, your baby weighs about 298 grams (10.5 ounces), and her length from head to rump is 17.78cm (seven inches), about the length of a spoon. Ten and a half ounces is also the size bear cubs are when they are born. Your baby has begun her main project for the rest of your pregnancy: putting on weight. She regularly drinks amniotic fluid for hydration and nutrition, urinates in the fluid and breathes in and out (fortunately, the fluid pool refreshes itself every three hours). Her eyebrows and eyelids are fully developed. Taste buds are forming on her tongue. Her eyelids are still sealed, but her eyes are active.
One of the babes is moving around a lot now as I sit here typing. It's been a long and emotional day, so I think it's time to get horizontal. Night night with lots of love to you all & miss you my darling xxx

Movement
Well after all the drop-lip action of last night, the little one on the right was pushing her way around this morning at 6.30am...of course the minute I grabbed Brad's hand, she stopped! Murphy's Law :) I think Brad thought I was imagining it all! It was an "Alien" weird and awesome feeling all at the same time...no kicking or pain, just a pushing feeling. It makes it more real everyday....that I am actually carrying two little babies around, and didn't just eat too much ;) Wow!!!!!!

Hiya!
We're back!!!!! It was an amazing holiday, and the countryside and towns were beautiful, clean and blossoming.....tulips and daffodils everywhere. Speaking of blossoming....if we'd done this trip any later, I'd have been in serious trouble....tummy grew exponentially the week we were away.
Had appointment with gynae last Wednesday for 19-week check-up. Decided I wasn't going to cancel, as I just wanted to be sure all is going well. I hardly slept on the flight on the way home, and my ankles were shockingly swollen on the Sunday night, and had been having breathtaking stitches in groin, so wanted to clear up those 2 issues so I didn't obsess about it :)
Brad didn't make it to the appointment, but both little babes are doing great. What Dr and I saw was the one at the back stroking the one in fronts back. It was so noe-noes :) Well at least till the one in front lifted her head quite suddenly and gave the one at the back an almighty head-bang! Shame man! All the same it was great to see them interacting like that!
For my part the ankle swelling is gone, and the stitches are from a stretching uterus...lovely! As of right now though, have not felt any kicks or their movements yet, but am told anyday now...so we wait :)

Fetal Assessment Centre: 13 weeks and 3 days....
Yes yes I know I'm doing some time-machine travel back to the past, but scanner is fixed, so here is a pic of the girls in the same frame....after we were given the all-clear of no Down's etc.
